Halloween by Boat on Lake Martin

Melanie Shelton has been collecting Halloween and Christmas decorations since she was a teenager.  In her 60’s now, Melanie has the largest Halloween display on Lake Martin.  Her cabin is located just south of Goat Island and has been her full time home since 2010, but the cabin has been in her family since the 70’s.   I asked Melanie to tell me about the display;

“I was always decorating my yard when I lived in Coosada and always got a lot of trick or treaters.  I was a little sad that I wouldn’t be getting any trick or treaters at the lake. I still had a lot of decorations and decided to decorate anyway because even if no one saw it I would still enjoy it.”

“I also decorate the inside of my house and my porch. It is a lot of work and I have a lot of help from my friend Kellye. It takes about two full weeks to set up.  I keep adding new pieces every year so the display gets bigger and better every year. I love seeing everyone else enjoying it. That makes all the hard work worth it. I just retired in August after 35 years at Alabama Power. I have more time to shop for new things. I was able to put things up earlier this year since I’m retired now. I have three really huge displays that I got at Home Depot. A 12 ft skeleton, a 12 ft inferno pumpkin man, and a 12 ft witch.I should receive the back ordered witch by next week. I go over the top at Christmas too even decorating the sandbar since the water is down by Christmas.”

Check out some of what you can find at her display this year…

We stopped by to visit and Melanie showed us the new pavilion she had built this year (2023) for three new Halloween animatronics that need protection from the elements. You’ll have to go by to see what they are! You won’t be disappointed!
Along with all the decor Melanie has lit all the displays with LED lighting so that boaters can fully see the spooky creatures from your boat at night. It’s truly a labor of love and you can spend forever looking at all the creative details.

The decorations will be on every night from 5:00 pm-11:00 pm until Halloween. Please enjoy the decorations but be mindful of the no wake zone buoy as you enter the slough. Also, be aware of the hazard buoy near my pier. There is a sandbar that runs from the buoy to the steps near my pier. As the lake drops the water will be really shallow between the buoy and my steps. Thank you and enjoy!

Here’s an interactive map to find the display by water…

Watch for the Hazard...

2023 Halloween House Tour

Lake Martin is implementing a new proximity law affecting all boaters from October 1st, 2024. The law prohibits any motorized boat from operating above idle speed within 100 feet of any shoreline, dock, pier, boathouse, or other structure. It also restricts wakeboarding and wakesurfing within 200 feet of any shoreline, dock, pier, boathouse or other structure and in areas less than 400' wide. The law will be enforced through education, directed patrol, and warnings for first offenses for one year. As boaters, learn to judge the distance, get familiar with landmarks, and use technological assistance to avoid violating the law.
