Hike Smith Mountain by Boat on Lake Martin

Smith Mountain Fire Tower Boat Access

Perched high above the unsalted waters of Lake Martin in Alabama, the Smith Mountain Fire Tower, recently renamed Jerry W Bynum Fire Tower offers breathtaking panoramic views and a rewarding adventure for visitors. Built in 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, this historic landmark stands 90′ above the tallest elevation on Lake Martins Shoreline.  After the Forestry Commission abandoned Smith Mountain in 1980, the area became neglected, turning into a dumping site as the tower deteriorated. In 2010, CRATA took ownership of Smith Mountain, and with generous support from donors providing funds, materials, and volunteer labor, the tower was fully restored, now standing stronger than ever before.

The tower is a testament to Alabama’s conservation heritage and is a must-see for anyone exploring the area.

Accessing the trails by boat

 Accessing the Smith Mountain Fire Tower by boat is part of the charm and adventure of this day trip. Take note; the Park and the Tower are closed at sundown, so plan ahead to be back to your boat by dusk.  Lake Martin, renowned for its clear waters and scenic shoreline, makes approaching Smith Mountain an enjoyable experience. Boaters should head towards the Sandy Creek area, located near Dadeville. From there, you’ll use these coordinates;

32°48'26.2"N 85°50'39.8"W

You will see some pilings that were provided by the Alabama Power Company to support the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association.  The trail was built all by volunteers of CRATA.  John Prophitt of CRATA; “One piece of advice bring good hard-sole shoes for the hike. We see people trying it barefooted and flip flops (usual boating attire). Neither way is safe or comfortable. Also use insect repellent on feet and legs. Red bugs, ticks and mosquitoes make the mountain their home and are always looking for fresh blood.”  The docking area is primitive so bring your lines and fenders to protect your vessel.

Once ashore, a clearly marked hiking trail awaits you. The trail to the tower is about a half-mile trek through a mix of pine and hardwood forest.
