The Spring Fishing Report. Spring time striper fishing here on Lake Martin is what we call trophy season. March, April & May produce some of the largest stripers caught year round . March a few years back produced a 52 pounder for JB (one of our guides)! Most years we catch and release several 20 to 35 lb stripers and the occasional 40 + pounder . Some years may not be as good as other years but if all conditions are lined up right (weather, water temperature & clarity) and you spend enough time on the water in the right areas with the right approach with the right tackle then you have a great chance of catching your PB striper. I personally like fishing shallower water in the spring but if conditions aren’t right or I’m having a tuff day I do not hesitate to go to deep water spots that will normally produce year round. The warmer the water gets the earlier we leave the dock with our clients to the point we eventually are out on water at the latest by day light .
Fishing Green Lights
If you like fishing dock lights then spring (once water elevation has risen) is an awesome time to catch big quality stripers , nice bass and very healthy crappie. There are plenty of Green Monster Lights around Lake Martin and if home owners are not already on their dock fishing when you pull up then you should have an enjoyable night of catching. Remember to respect owners of the docks and lights because they don’t have to leave lights on. If you’re quiet and not disturbing them then you should be fine.
Courtesy and Safety First
Remember spring time brings out most all types of fishermen and ladies and there’s over 40,000 acres of water to fish so be respectful to the others fishing and don’t get right on top of them just move on to another spot.
As always wear a PFD, your kill switch and watch for floating debris, the spring time produces a lot of debris so be careful.
